What changed: Shopify introduced a feature that lets stores automatically generate return and refund, contact information, terms of service, shipping, and legal notice policies. Automated policies stay up to date as store settings change and in sync with Shopify's recommendations.

Who is affected

All merchants running a Shopify store; the source does not mention any further restriction.

What it means for your business

For businesses using Shopify, this means policy text for returns, shipping, contact, and terms of service can be generated and kept in sync with store settings automatically, instead of being written and updated by hand.

What to do

In the Shopify admin, go to Settings > Policies, select the policy you want, enable Use automated policy, and click Save. You remain responsible for your policies and your store's compliance with applicable laws.

When it takes effect

The source does not give a separate effective date; the announcement is dated October 08, 2026.
